How is PTE scored?

All the tests of PTE are scored using a machine which ensures unbiased, objective score based on the candidate’s performance. The candidate will get a detailed report with an overall score between 10 and 90, and detailed skills profile. This skills profile includes independent scores for communicative skills and enabling skills.

Communicative skills include scores for listening, reading, writing and speaking. The elements that come under the enabling skills category are oral fluency, pronunciation, written discourse, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling.

Each of these sub-skills is scored between 10 and 90 depending on your performance. PTE is accepted across different universities in most countries and is also accepted for visa purposes in New Zealand and Australia.

Duolingo English test

The latest in the block, Duolingo English test is the new variant accepted by most universities and colleges worldwide when it comes to international admissions. This has become popular during the COVID 19 period, wherein many of the popular language assessment tests saw cancellations of its paper-based tests and only those which did offer a computer-based home test survived.

The Duolingo English Test is a computer-based test that lasts for one hour and the results can be procured within 48 hours.

This first five minutes of the test takes you through the settings of the test and introduces you to the rules and regulations involved in the test. This is called the ‘quick set-up’. The next 45 minutes is a graded test with tasks for listening, reading, writing and speaking and this section is called the ‘adaptive test’. There is also an ungraded section of 10 minutes which is a ‘video interview’ and requires you to record your answers to open-ended questions.

Like most computer-based test, Duolingo English test, which has only the computer version, requires a candidate to have an identification document which can be a passport, driver’s license or any other government id. The test should be taken in a room which has good lighting and is free from any kind of disturbances. There are also hardware and software requirements to take the test. A computer with a reliable internet connection, a browser that supports the test, a front-facing camera: external or in-built, speakers and a microphone.
